Gail Mattey graduated from the University of Delaware with an Honors B.A. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Psychology before earning her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. For over 12 years, Gail has represented clients in a variety of Family Law matters.
After graduating law school, Gail spent seven years in Hennepin County District Court, first as a Law Clerk in Drug and DWI Court, then as Executive Assistant to the Chief Judge, culminating in five years as a Law Clerk in Family Court under Judge James T. Swenson, Judge Philip C. Carruthers, and Referee Jason T. Hutchison. Gail’s years with the court have provided her with invaluable experience navigating the court system, and her five years in Family Court have provided her with an unparalleled depth and breadth of knowledge of family law to enable her to strongly advocate for her clients in all family law related matters.
Gail’s strong sense of empathy and compassion enables her to connect with her clients, while her strong analytical reasoning and thorough knowledge of the law enables her to act as an effective advocate as she guides clients through the intimidating court process. Gail is a strong believer in alternative dispute resolution and will work with clients to amicably settle their disputes to minimize the acrimony involved in the legal process. However, should alternative dispute resolution fail, she is not shy to pursue litigation and will zealously advocate for her clients before the Judge and seek the assistance of the court when needed. Gail’s dual approach to resolving cases enables her to tailor her strategy to meet the unique needs of each individual client, resolving matters efficiently and effectively.
Prior to joining Atticus Family Law, Gail operated a solo family law firm, specializing in divorce, child custody, child support, Orders for Protection, Harassment Restraining Orders, grandparent visitation, and third-party custody. She also worked as a contract attorney for Central Minnesota Legal Services practicing exclusively family law, including extensive work representing victims of domestic abuse.
Gail’s depth of experience gives her a deep understanding of family law, the legal analysis and insight as to how judges think about parents, spouses, and children in these crucial matters. Throughout her career she has passionately advocated for her clients in contested hearings, trials, and mediations to achieve their goals.
