St. Paul Family Law Attorneys

If you are facing a divorce, have child custody or child support modification issues, have spousal maintenance concerns, or are experiencing any number of other important family-related legal issues, you need an experienced St. Paul family law attorney on your side. These issues are important matters that can significantly affect you and your children’s future, and they shouldn’t be taken lightly or left to chance.

Divorce and Family Law Matters

If you are facing a divorce, it’s a complicated matter, and it’s critical that you pay careful consideration to each of the major components to help ensure that you and your children’s rights are well protected throughout the process and beyond. These components include:

  • Child Custody Arrangements – Generally, both parents share legal custody and make important decisions on behalf of their children together – including decisions related to health care, education, religion, and more. Further, one parent usually becomes the primary custodial parent with whom the children live the majority of the time, and the other parent receives a visitation schedule.
  • Division of Marital Property – The division of marital property refers to an equitable – or fair in relation to the circumstances – division of the assets you and your spouse acquired together as a married couple, which is known as your marital property.
  • Child Support – Child support is the state’s way of ensuring that both parents share the financial responsibility of raising their children into adulthood. Child support is based on state calculation guidelines, and the parent with the visitation schedule generally pays child support to the primary custodial parent.
  • Spousal Maintenance – Spousal maintenance – or what many of us think of as alimony – is not the norm. Alimony, however, is considered appropriate when one divorcing spouse is facing a financial deficit, and the other has the financial means to rectify the matter. The amount and duration of alimony are based on a wide range of factors that include the duration of the marriage, each spouse’s contributions to the marriage, and much more.

Modifications

Perhaps your divorce was finalized earlier, but your situation – either your financial situation, your living situation, or both – have changed significantly, and your child custody orders, your child support orders, and/or your spousal maintenance orders are no longer adequate – or no longer apply. Whatever your situation, a modification may be a possibility, but you’ll need to take the matter before the court – and you’ll need the professional legal counsel of an experienced family law attorney to help ensure you have the best chance of achieving your important goals.
